ELEKTRA project officially starts

May 14, 2026

After participating in the COUPLED project activities earlier this week, we were also proud to join the official kick-off meeting of the ELEKTRA project in Madrid.

ELEKTRA brings together leading European industrial players, technology companies, and research institutes to accelerate the electrification and decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries.
Within the project, ZEFIRA will bring its plasma-based CO₂ conversion technology toward TRL 6, demonstrating the recycling of CO₂ into CO for blast furnace applications.

Our technology aims to:

⚡ Convert captured CO₂ into valuable CO using renewable electricity
🏭 Reinject CO into blast furnace operations
🔥 Reduce coke consumption in ironmaking
🌍 Lower overall CO₂ emissions from steel production
🔄 Enable circular carbon utilisation pathways for hard-to-abate industries

The ELEKTRA project represents a major step toward flexible, electrified industrial processes capable of integrating renewable electricity while improving resource efficiency and reducing fossil carbon dependency.

The project is coordinated by Iberdrola with the support of 1 Cube BV, ZEFIRA’s mother company, together with a strong consortium of industrial and research partners across Europe.

We look forward to transforming breakthrough technologies into scalable industrial solutions for the future of low-carbon industry.
